The best goal tracking app for iPhone depends on one question most reviews skip: do you want to track goals, or habits? Only two apps in this list track both: Strides and GoalGo. Streaks, Habitify and Productive are habit trackers with daily quantities; Habitica is a game. Prices, free plans and what happens when you miss a day differ more than the feature lists suggest.

How we picked and compared

We looked for apps that a person searching "goal tracker" on the App Store would realistically install: established, actively updated, with a free way in or a very low one-time price. We then compared on the things that change how the app feels after a month, not on the length of the feature list:

  • Goals or habits. Does it track an outcome with an end, or only a repeated daily action?
  • The missed-day model. Streak reset, damage to an avatar, a percentage, or a score that recovers.
  • Price and free plan. What you get before paying, and what paying costs per year.
  • Account and data. Whether you need a login, where the data lives, whether you can export it.
  • Platform reach. Widgets, Apple Watch, Mac, Android, web.

GoalGo: best if your habits should add up to something

GoalGo is built around the idea that a habit exists to serve a goal, and that a missed day should cost you a little, not everything. Goals come in three shapes: reach a number in your own units, complete a checklist of dated steps, or quit something and count the days. Each habit can be linked to the goal it works towards, and the whole thing is summarised by Momentum, a 0–100 score that grows with every action and fades gradually instead of resetting.

There is no account. Data lives in a database on the phone, backups are a single file you can export on any plan, and iCloud sync (Premium) goes to your own iCloud. The free plan is unusually complete for the category: 2 goals, 4 habits, and all four home screen widgets. The gaps are real too: iPhone only today, no Apple Watch app, no Apple Health integration, and the free plan's limits are tight if you have many parallel goals. Full detail in our comparison pages.

Strides: best for tracking across every Apple device

Strides has been tracking habits and goals since 2013 and offers the most tracker mechanics of anything here: Habit, Target (a number by a date, with a pace line), Average, and Project (milestones). It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision, syncs through iCloud with no account, and pulls numbers from Apple Health. The free plan covers 3 trackers; Strides Plus in-app purchases on the US App Store run from $4.99 to $149.99 across monthly, yearly and lifetime options, and the website doesn't publish a price table. Its progress model is the conventional one: streaks and success rates. If you want SMART-goal templates and a Mac app, Strides is the one to try first. See GoalGo vs Strides.

Habitify: best for integrations and platform reach

Habitify is a habit tracker that runs everywhere: iOS, Android, Mac, Apple Watch and the web, kept in sync through an account. Its strength is what plugs into it: Apple Health, Google Calendar, Zapier and IFTTT, location reminders, habit stacking. Habits can carry a daily quantity, but there is no long-term goal with a deadline or checklist. Free covers 3 habits; Pro is $8.99 a month, $49.99 a year or $119.99 lifetime on the App Store, with cheaper web-billed plans on its site. See GoalGo vs Habitify.

Streaks: best one-time purchase, if the chain motivates you

Streaks won an Apple Design Award and it shows: 24 daily tasks, negative tasks for things to avoid, timed tasks, Apple Health auto-completion, Apple Watch and Mac apps, all for $5.99 once. Its philosophy is in the name: don't break the chain, or it resets to zero. If that has ever made you quit an app, look elsewhere; if it works for you, nothing here is better value. There are no long-term goals. See GoalGo vs Streaks.

Productive: best for time-of-day routines and Android today

Productive groups habits into morning, afternoon and evening routines, adds community challenges and location-based reminders, and is on Android now. Goals attach to individual habits (an amount per day, times per week) rather than existing as a separate outcome. The free plan has a limited number of habit slots; Premium is $10.99 a month with yearly options listed from $19.99 to $79.99 on the App Store. See GoalGo vs Productive.

Habitica: best if gamification works on you

Habitica turns habits, dailies and to-dos into an RPG: check things off to earn gold and experience, miss dailies and your avatar takes damage, join a party and fight bosses with friends. The core game is free on web, iOS and Android; subscriptions run $4.99 a month to $47.99 a year. It has no numeric long-term goals and requires an account, but for the right person the social pull is stronger than any pace line. See GoalGo vs Habitica.

Which to choose

  • You want goals and habits connected, and a forgiving score: GoalGo.
  • You want every Apple device, Apple Health and SMART templates: Strides.
  • You switch between Android, iPhone and a browser, or want automations: Habitify.
  • You want to pay once and the chain motivates you: Streaks.
  • You think in routines and want challenges, or need Android today: Productive.
  • You want a game with friends: Habitica.

Mistakes people make choosing a goal tracker

  1. Buying a habit tracker for a goal. If the thing has an end (24 books, 500 km), you need a progress bar towards it, not a heatmap.
  2. Ignoring the missed-day model. It decides whether you are still using the app in March.
  3. Counting features instead of hours. Integrations are worth nothing if you don't have the devices they integrate with.
  4. Not checking where the data lives. An account means a server; a server means a company decision can take your history.
  5. Paying yearly on day one. Every app here has a free way in. Use it for two weeks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a goal tracker and a habit tracker?

A habit tracker records whether you did a repeated action today. A goal tracker records progress towards an outcome with an end: a number, a finished checklist, a count of days. Most apps in the category are habit trackers with a 'goal' label on a daily quantity. Strides and GoalGo are the two here that track both, with GoalGo linking each habit to the goal it serves.

Which goal tracking app is free?

Habitica's core game is free. GoalGo is free for 2 goals and 4 habits with every widget included. Strides gives you 3 trackers, Habitify 3 habits and Productive a limited number of habit slots before their paid plans. Streaks has no free tier; it is a $5.99 one-time purchase.

Which goal tracker works without an account?

GoalGo, Strides and Streaks all work with no account and sync through your own iCloud. Habitify and Habitica require an account for sync; Productive offers sign-in but doesn't require it to start.

Are any of these on Android?

Habitify, Productive and Habitica are on Android today. Streaks is Apple-only. Strides has an Android waitlist, and GoalGo's Android version is coming soon with a waitlist on our download page.
